INTERVIEWER: On the website your group's research sounds wonderful. I liked the idea, for example, of computers recognising emotions in users like stress and frustration.
ROSALIND: We should be careful what we're monitoring here. Computers can't really read your internal feelings, only what's on the outside, if you're smiling, moving in a certain way, temperature of your skin, etc. You really have to distinguish between what the technology is doing and what people do, and the computer only knows that certain facial and body movements and sweat reactions are typical of frustration or stress.
INTERVIEWER: What are the commercial applications of all this?
ROSALIND: We've been looking at many things, for example, how to monitor stress in different ways. Stress has direct effects on the heart and the immune system.
INTERVIEWER: Is that from the corporate world, looking to monitor stress levels among staff?
ROSALIND: Yes, but I had one chief technology officer who asked me if they could monitor stress in their employees without their employees knowing ... , so I gave him a long lecture about why I thought that was a bad idea. He eventually backed down.
INTERVIEWER: Good.
ROSALIND: I really think it's better to give these tools to people to learn about their own bodies, not to feel monitored. And I think it would be dangerous if your boss knew something you didn't know. And there's the problem that there is air in these measurements. The big challenge with using computers to measure emotion is to interpret the data accurately. So your boss could easily get the wrong impression.
INTERVIEWER: So it's using technology to help people?
ROSALIND: Yes, it is. I want to develop tools so people can build up emotional intelligence. I really think it's better to give these tools to people to learn about their own bodies and, hopefully, better manage emotional states and feelings in the service of their goals - maybe with something you wear at work, clothes, or so-called intelligent earrings, to monitor stress. But to impose this on people is actually, well, is definitely controversial and I'm not following up that line of research.
INTERVIEWER: Do you see these technologies creating a more personal contact across the virtual internet world?
ROSALIND: Yes. For example, in online chats, etc. If someone in a chatroom cracks a joke and somebody laughs, there are changes on the skin which computers can read and then express as an icon turning red or looking a little more excited, or laughing.
INTERVIEWER: OK, so you can know that they're laughing for real?
ROSALIND: Yes. Or when there's a video-conference brainstorming session online, when you're really in a room with somebody and you throw out an idea, you can sort of see by their response immediately, you know, they sit back in their chair and their eyes look big.
INTERVIEWER: So you would use visual representation to show people are unsure or support the idea?
ROSALIND: Oh, yeah. On the icon, I could just see the mouth smile or you know one eyebrow raised, the head at an angle, eyes open, for eye contact... looking at you.
INTERVIEWER: I can imagine working in the way you've done with emotion and communication at such a deep level, has it enhanced the way you interact with people and machines?
ROSALIND: Hmm, I really don't know! I think it certainly makes you appreciate more the importance, for example, of empathy, recognising people's feelings, of human interaction. And maybe not just trying to solve somebody's problems but truly trying to understand their feelings.
INTERVIEWER: Interesting. I have to ask one last question, although I'm sure the answer is yes. Has the military been interested in this kind of research?
ROSALIND: Increasingly since nine eleven.
INTERVIEWER: They'd be looking to be aware of highly stressed individuals in an environment like an airport, for example?
